Ensuring safety is a priority, labourers work in a team environment to build and maintain railways by manually grading ballasts, pulling out spikes and hammering in spikes to the rail ties, loading and unloading various heavy material on and off vehicles, and other daily functional manual duties. We are prepared to train the right candidates so previous experience is not required. Our only requirement is that successful candidate appreciate working safely within a team environment and are committed to quality work each and every day.

At A&B Rail Services, we are currently seeking a Project Manager who will report to the Eastern Signals Manager. The Project Manager is responsible for providing overall direction for one or more projects and or supporting the development of new business opportunities relative to a particular client, group of clients, geographical location and or product line. They will need to plan, direct and manage all activities of all assigned projects at different stages of completion, to ensure that company objectives for customer satisfaction, safety, quality, production, revenue and profit are met within a specific time frame. The individual will need to actively supports the Company’s commitment to safety and its core values. Develop and implement Quality Management Plans, Safety Management Plans, Engineering, Procurement, Fabrication, Manufacturing, and Construction plans as required to meet project objective. Provide strong leadership to construction team members, capitalizing on individual and group strengths as well as perform other related duties as required

 

The successful candidate for this role will demonstrate the following skills and experiences:

 

  • Bachelor degree in Electrical/Engineering or related field; or 6+ years related experience without a degree
  • Minimum 5 years’ experience in the construction/industrial industry
  • Strong interpersonal, communication and customer service skills
  • Strong computer skills are required with proven proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook)
  • Ability to plan and manage to a project schedule
  • Understanding of method of bidding, purchasing, negotiating, contracting, cash flow, expediting, receiving and transporting
  • A track record of building successful teams, effectively motivating people and maintaining effective relationships with clients, owners and consultant.

Boom Truck Operator

At A&B Rail Services, we are currently seeking Boom Truck Operator who will be responsible for working with the signals crew distributing and transporting signal material and machinery. Working alongside crew on site as required. Tasks include, Operating Hi-Rail boom truck and or other equipment, Loading/Unloading and securement of equipment and material and physical labour when required. This individual will at times work in high noise levels, fast paced and labour intensive roles, all weather conditions, standing/sitting varies on a daily basis and can be given multiple responsibilities at any given time.

 

The successful candidate for this role will demonstrate the following skills and experiences:

  • AZ License with 1-3 years’ experience
  • Clean criminal record
  • Clean drivers abstract
  • Working away from home
  • Experience operating truck mounted crane / log loader
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 75lbs unassisted

Flagman

MAIN PURPOSE: Reporting to the Manager Track Protection Services, the Flag Person is responsible for controlling and directing contractors on active railway rights-of-way on and through the construction work zone within defined limits. Using specific railway operating rules, instructions and techniques, this position ensures that contractors clear the working zone prior to the approach of a train minimizing any delays to scheduled railway operations. This individual will direct the contractor’s on-site equipment and personnel when working in close proximity to active rail corridors and related hazards, and communicates and interacts with the contractor and railway personnel in a courteous and professional manner.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Conducts daily job briefings in order that all contactors understand site specific instructions prior to commencing work
  • Review the work site on a minimum daily basis and consults with Supervisor and or contractors representative to understand work being conducted, and any potential hazards.
  • Maintain alertness at all times.
  • Set up, reposition and dismantle railway specific signage.
  • Protect workers and the public by keeping work space free of traffic, and warning oncoming traffic of potential hazards.
  • Communicate effectively with other flagmen and Rail Traffic Controllers using established procedures and radio equipment to ensure the understanding of instructions, track protection limits, work site hazards and other specific site conditions.
  • Install and dismantles railway signalling devices (flags) at designated locations
  • Once briefed, directs movement of personnel and equipment through
  • Prepares daily timesheets, work sheets and other reports as required
  • Promotes, executes and adheres to the company’s safety program, and encourage all employees, sub-contractors and consultants to adopt safety as a culture.
  • Driving of assigned company vehicle
  • Other duties as assigned

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Sound understanding of railway engineering safety regulations, safe work practices and work procedures and be capable of assisting in maintaining safe work sites
  • Able to work in a safety sensitive position, in a unique role directing contractors who are engaged with completing multi-million dollar construction projects on live railway corridors within tight schedules
  • Knowledge of workplace safety requirements and procedures

 

JOB REQUIREMENTS

  • A high school diploma with at least 2 years of related work experience in the protecting of track units and track work or related experiences in railway environments
  • Valid Ontario Class “G” Driver’s License
  • Canadian Railway Operating Rules certification considered an asset.
  • Prior experience working within a railway company is a definite asset.
  • Training in railway “Track Inspection Guidelines” or equivalent is an asset
  • Ability to read instructions, follow written policies and procedures.
  • Ability to work independently or as part of a team.
  • Perform duties in inclement weather, with possible exposure to severe weather conditions.

Operators

MAIN PURPOSE: Ensuring safety is a priority, operators work in a team environment to build and maintain railways in numerous locations across Canada by operating one or more specific machine such as a tamper, regulator, spiker, speed swing, extractor, plate jack or other on the railway track as per the operator’s manual. Operators must also ensure compliance with all governed regulations such as DOT.  Daily inspections and minor repairs are also completed.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Ensuring safety is a priority to self, fellow workers, the general public and the assets of the company and following policies and procedures set out by the company
  • Operate one or more specific machines such as but not limited to; tamper, regulator, spiker, speed swing, kribber, extractor, plate jack or other on railway track as per the operator manual
  • Daily walk around inspection if machine, general housekeeping of machine and minor repairs to machine when necessary to ensure safe operation
  • Daily administration of log books, job briefings etc. mandated by law ensuring compliance with governed regulations of transportation such as DOT logs when applicable
  • Compliance to track rules and instructions according to CROR
  • Assist with manual labour when necessary
  • Communicate effectively over radio following CTC standards
  • Meet productivity level requirements set out by supervisors/foremen
  • Other duties as assigned

SKILLS KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:

  • Knowledge of workplace safety and safe lifting and handling procedures
  • Ability to operator required equipment in a safe and responsible manner
  • Effective communication skills including listening, writing and speaking
  • Good client service and public interaction skills
  • Ability to work independently and in a team environment

  • Good hand and eye coordination

JOB REQUIREMENTS:

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Minimum 6 months experience working in railway or construction industry

  • CROR required (will train)
  • Basic hand tools such as wrenches, pliers, screwdrivers

  • BMO training required
  • Clear criminal record preferred
  • Clean drivers abstract preferred
  • First Aid, Fall Arrest, GEI, Forklift Loader, Specific Machine Operator Certification is an asset (will train)

Foreman

 

MAIN PURPOSE: Reporting to the Superintendent or Project Manager, the Foreman is responsible for managing and directing a crew of workers to deliver a successful project by meeting or exceeding corporate and project goals. The Foreman must ensure safety, quality, profitability, and scheduling, resulting in customer satisfaction.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Review all contracts, project documentation and plans to ensure that the work in the field is built to the most recent specifications and scope of work
  • Pre-plan work activities with Superintendent to develop best means and methods, including safety action plans
  • Plan the day-to-day operations on the assigned project, and ensure that proper resources are in place for the timely completion of work i.e., labour, equipment, and material
  • Take responsibility for crew performance as related to company goals, safety audits, administration of company policies and procedures. Conduct tailgate meetings. Initiate follow-up action as necessary including training, orientation, discipline, etc.
  • Conduct daily briefing with crew to review production goals, performance feedback, safety and schedule, hazards, and to solicit feedback from the workers
  • Maintain a dedication to safety at all times by modeling, providing education and enforcing safe work practices, company policies and procedures. Ensure that proper safety equipment is available and used by all field personnel
  • Communicate with the Project Superintendent, Project Manager, General Contractor and customer to ensure a high level of customer satisfaction
  • Communicate with sub-contractors to coordinate work, goals, etc.
  • Perform a variety of related administrative tasks such as production reports, timesheets, equipment logs, inspection reports, change orders, and updating project files
  • Perform other related administrative or project based duties as assigned
  • Provide coaching and instruction to all crew members
  • Other duties as assigned

JOB REQUIREMENTS

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • 3-5 years railway experience; 1-2 years in a similar role
  • Valid Class 5 Driver’s license or equivalent
  • Valid certification in Canadian Railway Operating Rules
